Data Type: Tourist Survey
Type of Sampling: Opportunistic Sampling - I will use opportunistic sampling as at the time it will be easiest as people will be available at different
times.
Links to sub-questions: Why do people visit Castleton? How do peopl travel to Castleton? What are the demographics that visit Castleton? What is Castleton's sphere of influence? What are people's opinions on Castleton? What are the tourist's habits inb Castleton? How has Castleton changed?
How the data will be collected: I will write around 8-10 questions in preparation for the survey, this is to ensure the survey is only around 3 minutes long, quick so that thetourists' can continue to enjoy their holiday. I will use a range of question types including: open/closed questions, bi-polar questions, multiple choice questions and answers. I will also include an observed question of the demographic for the person i am surveying as to not cause offence by asking them. When doing the survey i will first ask the interviewee how their day has been to put them at ease around me. I will then introduce myself and explain my purpose in doing the questionnaire. Throughout the survey i will continually smile and be polite so people feel comfortable around me. At the end of the survey i will thank them for the time and then wish them to have a lovely rest of their holiday.
Location: Weaving Avenue (Location 16); Back Street (Location 10); Cross Street (Location 4)
Justification (why it's important): It is important as: i can collect primary evidence in large volumes; find people's views and perspective's on tourism in Castleton; find the range of tourist requirements such as tourist information centre's; find how the area is being used and then how it could therefore be managed.
Problems: Some problems that i could face are: people are uncooperative; my survey could be biased towards a certain demographic depending upon who is available to interview that day; it may be hard to find people due to bad weather; it may be hard to get people to stop and answer the
survey.
How these problems can be overcome: To overcome these problems i will: make sure to survey each demographic group; go on the weekend/ in a holiday period to Castleton to ensure tourists being there; plan the day in advance by looking at the weather reports; smile and be polite; if there is no one outside due to the weather try inside in places such as coffee shops.
Data Type: Traffic Count
Type of Sampling: Systematic Sampling - I will use systematic sampling as it is an unbiased system and i can therefore set where i shall go before the day to carry out the data.
Links to sub-questions: How the amount of traffic varies in different places and at different times? The range of transport people use? What are the most popular areas of Castleton?
How the data will be collected: I will allocate myself locations in which i will stand at a certain point by the road for 5 minutes and tally how many modes of transport pass me and what mode of transport it is. At the end of the 5 minutes i will make a total for each mode of transport that passed me.
Location: Weaving Avenue (Location 16); Back Street (Location 10); Cross Street (Location 4)
Justification (why it's important): It will give me a range of primary research; it is quick to do; it shows me the varieties of transport in which people use so that i can eventually work out the probabilities for each mode of transport.
Problems: Traffic jams may cause confusion; traffic may go too quickly so i may not be able to see it; there could be a lack of transport; it is hard to distinguish between tourist traffic and local traffic.
How these problems can be overcome: Do not lack in concentration; perhaps get another person to do it with me so i do not miss anything.
Data Type: Parking Survey
Type of Sampling: Random Sampling - If come across a car park i can then collect the data from it due to means of ease.
Links to sub-questions: How many people visit Castleton? Mode of transport used? How the amount of transport there is can impact on our carbon emissions?
How the data will be collected: When coming across a car park i will count the spaces available, the spaces taken and the total spaces and put them in a tally. With this i can work out how popular different locations are within Castleton.
Location: Weavy Avenue (Location 16); Back Street (Location 10); Cross Street (Location 4)
Justification (why's it important): It will give me an overall view on how popular different locations in Castleton are and therefore where the biggest 'honeypots' are.
Problems: People may come and go in the car park whilst taking the survey.
How these problems can be overcome: When counting the spaces and transport in a tally i will not regard any people that have come and go after the space they have left/aquired has already be accounted for.
Data Type: Business Interview
Type of Sampling: Opportunistic Sampling - When i see a business that is not too busy i will go in and see if they will answer some questions.
Links to sub-questions: How tourists' in Castleton affects things such as businesses and therefore the economy?
Businesses views and perspectives on tourism? How tourism has affected jobs in Castleton?
